Glimepiride Indication.
For concomitant use with insulin for the treatment of noninsulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes mellitus.
Glimepiride Contraindications.
Glimepiride is contraindicated in Patients with:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, with or without coma. This condition should be treated with insulin.
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug.
Glimepiride Prescription.
Glimepiride is prescribed with diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Glimepiride stimulates your pancreas to make more insulin and also makes your body more sensitive to insulin. Glimepiride may be used with or without insulin.
Glimepiride is the first III generation sulphonyl urea it is a very potent sulphonyl urea with long duration of action.
How should Glimepiride be used?
Glimepiride comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day. The tablet should be taken with breakfast or the first big meal of the day.
Glimepiride, like glyburide and glipizide, is a "second-generation" sulfonylurea agents. Glimepiride is used with diet to lower blood glucose by increasing the secretion of insulin from pancreas and increasing the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin.
Glimepiride side effects.
- blurred vision;
- breath that smells fruity;
- clumsy or jerky movements;
- confusion;
- decreased consciousness;
- dizziness or lightheadedness;
- dry mouth;
- extreme hunger;
- extreme thirst;
- frequent urination;
- headache;
- hunger;
- loss of consciousness;
- nervousness or irritability;
- numbness or tingling around the mouth;
- pale skin;
- seizures;
- shakiness;
- shortness of breath;
- sudden changes in behavior or mood;
- sweating;
- upset stomach and vomiting;
- weakness;
- weakness;
